If you are spending a few days wandering around Johannesburg you really should see Maropeng – Cradle of Human Kind. It is one of 8 heritage sites in South Africa, this being the only one in Gauteng, and is widely recognised as the place from which all of humankind originated. With a world-class visitor exhibition and recreational facilities showcasing the site forms part of the 47 000-hectare site that unearthed the best evidence of the complex journey which our species has taken to make us what we are today.
The famous pre-human skull known as “Mrs Ples” is dated as 2.3 million years old and a near complete hominid skeleton called “Little Foot” dated 4.17 million years old, both come from the World-renowned Sterkfontein Caves. With more hidden below the rocks, the caves make the visit unique.
With its own Boutique Hotel and restaurant, you can stay overnight.
It’s situated about 50 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa in the Gauteng province: The Maropeng Visitor Centre, Market Place and Tumulus restaurants, as well as the Maropeng Hotel, can be found just off the R563 Hekpoort Road, Sterkfontein, 1911, South Africa.
